Beautiful set. Great price

My mom used it the other day to carve a chicken. She stated, that it worked well for the first time. She hope it will continue to cut well, unlike her Wusthof chefs knife. I like the feel and weight of the two products.

Awesome carving set. Knife comes very sharp, cuts easily and smoothly. Love it.

I bought this as a birthday gift for my husband, who already has a few other Messermeister knives and loves them. Since I know he enjoys using his smoker, I figured these would be perfect to use for larger items he smokes (like pork butt or brisket). The only thing I didn't consider is that the safety covers are sold separately, so we cannot put them away in our silverware drawer until we go back and purchase the covers. We still look forward to their first use, but until then, my husband was overjoyed to receive.

I HAVE LITERALLY PURCHASED MORE SO-CALLED SHARP CARVING KNIVES...UNTIL I RECEIVED THIS ITEM...THIS IS "REALLY" A SHARP CARVING KNIFE
Family of Four
Great set. A set two times as much is not worth it unless you don't like it's old fashioned look. We've carved with it several times and found the heft and ease of use very pleasant. The only thing that's a bit of a killer is storage. We aren't quite sure how we should store it long term. Right now it's rolled up in a placemat a bound with a rubberband - not impressive.

Purchased this for Thanksgiving turkey. It is a really nice set, worked well to slice the turkey. Great value!

I purchased this to use on Christmas to carve my first prime rib. Sliced through like butter and a beautiful set worthy of display

Could use a box but for the money it’s a great knife set.

A serrated edge would have been nice, and the fork has some ruff spots that cut your hand a little when you wash it. Otherwise they are nice, heavy & sturdy.

I thought this would be made in Portugal as other Messermeister cutlery I have purchased in this price range; however, it's made in CHINA--returning for full refund.

Cut through my turkey like butter. Excellent knife. Very sharp.

Sliced my finger and the turkey with equal ease. Great sharp knife!

The good: this is a sturdy well made set that needed minimal sharpening upon arrival. It worked perfectly for carving our turkey. The bad: the finishing touches are a little rough. You can feel a slight edge where the handle material meets the tang. Despite that, it still feels good in the hand. The worst: not carefully packaged at all. I'm actually surprised it survived the journey. The flimsy cardboard box it comes in was thrown in a thin shipping pouch with no padding at all. The box was quite crumpled when extracted. The fact that the set was unscathed is a testament to its construction.

This is a beautiful set! We realized almost too late that we didn’t have a turkey carving set to serve dinner this year. Thanks to Amazon, we got it on time, and it was ready to go right out of the box- no sharpening needed! I would suggest to the manufacturer that this set should be packed in a protective box or reusable sheaths to protect them in the future, but for the price I paid for this set (and more importantly what I SAVED), I can definitely afford to get a knife block instead. My family was impressed by the gorgeous handles, and how clean the turkey sliced! Definitely a worthy investment, we’ll be using this set for years to come!

I did a little bit of research on this last year and it kept popping up as one of the best quality, inexpensive knives. I enjoyed using it to cut up my first turkey this last Thanksgiving.

I'm extremely happy with this product. The fork is exactly what I was looking for and the knife is perfectly balanced and sharped like a razor. I strongly recommend this product.
Vetragus Hibernicus
I bought this because I wanted a European style meat fork; the knife was really just an afterthought for me. I got what I wanted in the fork, which is solid, massive, and has a nice forged stiletto feel that allows you to hold on to meat while causing minimal damage to it. The matching knife is ok for the price, decently sharp, easily honed, but maybe just a tad too short for carving meat, but at this price I really won't complain.
T. doyle
All the messermeister knives are great. Other knives- total disasters. Everyone tells me my knives are the best. We have several and they are great quality. Everone agrees. Believe me, I have a very large brain.
Kevin McCauley
well made, cuts easily
Tommy
Nice knife. Complements my current set well. Very sharp, easily slices through soft bone. Weighted nicely. Carving fork is rather large, doesn't fit in knife block.
Jody
We just received a package labeled two-pieces, brown - but the package contained only the fork, with black handle. Very disappointing service.
brian
Bought it for hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year. It sliced the turkey beautifully.
Al
These look really nice, but they feel terrible in your hand. The seam down the handles are not smooth. The metal sticks out above the wood and is sharp in your hand. Same goes for the matching steak knives which I also purchased.I should've returned them, but I was too lazy. I regret buying these.
Kevin
Not as sharp as Mercer and handle isn’t perfect. You can feel imperfections - high and low spots

This is a knife I should have had many years before.

I Can't say enough about the quality of materials and finish of this set. I am using this set as a back-up for my high-end chef tools.

Better than expected, good quality, blade keeps a sharp blade.

Works well and cuts beautifully

I am very happy with my Messermeister purchase. The set is very attractive to look at. I don't see any of the craftsmanship problems other reviewers saw. The handles are smooth and comfortable to hold. The blade and fork appear exactly as they do in the picture. The edge is sharp, although not uniformly. Nothing a few minutes with a sharpener won't fix.The blade is made with food service steel. Very stain resistant but not really hard. Some have critiqued this harshly but that is really unfair. X50CrMoV15 steel is the best steel available in a knife at this price point. To get a better steel you would be looking at a set that costs over $100. The biggest problem is the product description over sells it. It's not "the highest quality German steel". Expect to sharpen it every two or three uses.My only real disappointment with the set is it comes in a retail (Hang on a shelf) package without any sort of case. For most knives at this price point that would be appropriate. But, a carving set is only used very occasionally in most circumstances. Unless it came in a block most of us shelf it somewhere until the need for the set arises. A minimal case or sleeve would be nice. Even if it made the set a little more expensive. The steel is German but the knife is Chinese made.
Debbie S
Great set. Works well.
Jennifer Ondrejka
The most finely honed steel anywhere. This set is sharper and better made than carving sets costing double or triple the price. It slices through meat like it's butter.
Gary Edwards
Nice but not great. Wood handles are a plus. Doesn’t cut as well as I would like.
Tom Schaefer
Sharp, attractive set.
SheilaG
Not sharp at all. In fact very dull and doesn’t carve well. I would give it no stars if that were possible. Waste of money.
Digital61
Nice set but messermeister needs to check the quality control on the knife handle. The fasteners are not smooth with the handle
Lulu
Very nice. Quality is pretty good, and the knife was sharp. Nice polished look, substantial weight to them. The wood handles appear to be good quality. Very satisfied..
It’s Me Eileen
Beautiful set - feel balance in the hand and good quality as well. My only wish is that they came in a protective box other than the plastic packaging to protect them between uses. That is a minor issue however and I’m glad I chose this set. They are good quality and classic looking
skigurl
I used this knife for the first time yesterday and it’s going back today. The tang isn’t flush with the handle and feels rough to the touch, almost sharp.

This is a Best Buy for any home cooks/chefs. The Price is Right.

Good knife for the price. Very sharp. Sturdy and high quality.

Packing box far too large for the carving set . The giant bubble packing was insufficient. Carving set was rattling around in the packing box.Set is excellent. Works as advertised.

'--- UPDATE: 08/29/20192 1/2yr update. Changed from 4 to 5 stars.I don't know what I was thinking back then. :-) Natural wood will expand and contract due to temperature and humidity changes. I already knew that, but at that time, I was doing an "out of the box" review and impression and likely focused too much on every fine detail at that particular moment.I did notice the difference for a few weeks after that, but the handles must have "normalized" because I completely forgot about it and they've felt just as smooth and silky as my steak knife set. I just checked them before updating this review and, yep, Perfection!--- Original ReviewI purchased this set simply because I love my Avanta Pakkawood steak knives so much I wanted a matching set. Much of what has been said so far is true so I won't repeat it. They have a great balance and heft typical of Messemeister and I am quite pleased with their performace. The blade and fork themselves are excellent, however, for those that are familiar with Messemeister's usual attention to overall quailty, you might be a tad disappointed.I deducted one star for the handles. While the tang and pakkawood are beautifully smooth and flush on my steak knives, the pakkawood on both the knife and fork are uniformily just a touch narrower than the tang. There is a slight ridge top and bottom along the full length of the handle that can certainly be felt. It's not a deal breaker, but it lacks that silky smooth feeling in your palm that I love so much about my steak knives that just oozes "quality".For the price, I certainly can't complain. I'm an outdoorsman that processes all of my own meats and seafoods. I "know" a good knive and the Messermeister's are certainly an excellent bargain for the quality that you get. I'm definately keeping this set, but measured against their own Avanta steak knives, the Avanta carving set just ever so slightly doesn't quite measure up.

Beautiful and functional, this was perfect for turkey carving this Thanksgiving.Worth noting...* The wooden handles, besides having a classic/vintage feel to them, are comfortable and functional.* The knife feels perfectly balanced, and cutting turkey is easy. The granton edge helps the knife slide easily through slices. I found it easy to do broad cuts (removing the breast from the breast) as well as the more precise cuts, and tough enough to cut through and separate pieces at the joints. In the past, I had been using a chef's knife for turkey carving, but this long slender blade gives more finer control over the carving.* The meat fork works well. The tines have rounded ends to make it easy to control the turkey without stabbing into it.Really, no complaints whatsoever. This set has made it through its first Thanksgiving, and I'm sure it will be used for many more to come.

I am impressed. I have, after years of thinking that all knifes were created equal, begun to collected actual knifes. I'm new at this, but this is what I like as an amateur knifeologist (wait... that's actually a word?).The handle (I wish there were a few choices) is solid and well weighted. I have used the knife for cutting all sorts of things — meat to vegetables — and each time, because of the weight, I can cut it just where I need to, and without worry about needing pressure that suddenly destroys the item. The blade is sharp and has stayed consistently sharp. The fork is heavy, the points sharp, and long enough for turkeys and roasts.Overall, this is a great set for the holidays — and a great knife for those who are wanting to slice their way to fine foods, rather than sawing.

For the price and quality, I would rate this as a medium to medium/high quality knife. The steel is German X50CrMoV15, which is a high alloy steel. It only has 0.5% carbon, so it is not actually considered a very high carbon steel. The steel uses Chromium, Molybdenum and Vanadium to give it its shiny and very stain resistant properties, and to increase hardness. The lower carbon content simply means is that it is not as hard of a steel as a highly expensive knife. If you use it a lot, you will be sharpening it more often than a knife with higher carbon steel, but that is not a bad thing, as regular sharpening tools (fine stones and sticks) will allow you to bring the edge back quickly. Not more than a few minutes of sharpening before each big job will give you a knife that will last for many years . As someone who cooks and cuts a lot, I like being able to quickly put a super sharp edge on my knife with a ceramic or diamond coated sharpening stick right before work. The highly expensive super high carbon steel knives are great for professional kitchens where they need to have a knife that stays sharp through a long session of heavy cutting, but they also require more time and technique for sharpening because the steel is so hard.If you are someone who prepares meals at home, cutting vegetables and meat for less than 30 minutes a day, this knife will last you forever, and you will not need to sharpen it very often. Finally, I like the feel of the wood handles and the ergonomics of the grip.

I was surprised at the nice heft and balance of this set when I received it. It seems to be well above its price point in quality. So far we've used it on a ham and several chicken dinners. Very sharp right out of the box and is a pleasure to use. It was perfect for the ham and allowed the slicing of nice thin pieces for sandwiches afterwards. The carving fork has tips that are quite sharp and they pierce and hold the slices very well. The knife is a bit on the large size so perhaps a little large for slicing smaller chickens, but it was mostly fine. Can't wait to use it this Thanksgiving on a nice large bird! The Messermeister Avanta knife is holding its edge just fine so far but we've only used it a few times. The X50CrMoV15 steel is marketed as high-carbon, but according to my research it's not really considered high-carbon. X50CrMoV15 is a German consumer grade, mid-level quality steel that holds an edge fairly well, and resists corrosion, but you won't find many professional chefs using knives made from this steel because it can't be sharpened to the perfect edge a true high-carbon steel knife can. Hand wash and dry right away to avoid rusting. The set comes in a fairly plain looking package - nothing fancy. It's basically a see-thru, thin plastic tray, and the knife and fork are held in molded cut-outs on the tray. Fortunately, the knife and fork are so nice looking with their satin metal, and smooth triple-rivet pakkawood handles, that the overall presentation is really sharp looking! This is very suitable for gift giving, in my opinion. This knife set is a very good value, and compares favorably in quality to sets twice its price.**** 4 STARS - RECOMMENDED! ****

This is a beautiful carving set that easily put my older (cheaper) hand-me-down set to shame. Right out of the box you can easily appreciate how solid and hefty the set is, without being overly heavy. They fit nicely in the hand with a comfortable grip, and the blade is wonderfully sharp. It's perfect for carving any kind of meat you can think of and I'm definitely looking forward to using it this Thanksgiving. The blades of the fork are nice and long and a bit squared which I think does a better job of holding the meat in place while you're carving, rather than having flat tines like most carving forks do. The steel is one solid piece all the way into the handles of each piece, meaning these are going to last a long time. The indentations along the edge of the knife help ensure that foods don't stick when you're pulling the knife through what you are carving. The only small detail I wish was included - a case to hold them when they are not being used. It's such a nice set I hate to throw them in my utensil drawer where they'll be pushed and shoved around, it would be nice if a simple case was included to store them in.
Cheryl A. Reynolds
Not only does this carving set look beautiful,it's perfection when it comes to function. Just the right size for carving up a turkey, a ham, a large roast, and the knife is VERY sharp. Looks to be well made and I expect it will last for years.
Poogy
A nice mid-quality carving set. It's razor sharp out of the package and will make short work of that roast. Both knife and fork have full tangs--the blades extend all the way to the end of the handle so they can't separate from the handle. The handles are pieces of pakkawood riveted to the tang. Pakkawood is a type of plywood, and it's wood impregnated with plastic so it's heat and water resistant. This makes it a good choice for a knife handle--it won't warp or split. But it looks very much like wood.Although the steel is marketed as "high-carbon" steel, the X50CrMoV15 metal isn't actually high carbon; it's 0.5% carbon, as well as about 14% chromium, with a little vanadium and molybdenum. It's very stain resistant (there's no such thing as truly "stainless" steel), but it won't hold an edge all that well--you'll have to sharpen it more frequently than harder steels. But it's a decent alloy used in quality German blades by Wusthof and others. The blade also has scallops along the side, sometimes called a Granton edge but more accurately this knife has kullens, since they don't extend all the way to the edge. This can help to avoid certain foods sticking to the knife, such as cheese or cucumbers or potatoes. They can be helpful on a carver such as this, when slicing ham or turkey or smoked salmon. The cross-section of the fork's tines is square, which may help it grab the meat a little better than flat tines. All in all, this a solid, attractive carving set that would make a good gift if you don't use them yourself.
Brian W.
Very nice wood and solid construction! Great product for the price.

The Messermeister Avanta Pakkawood 2 Piece Kullenschliff Carving Set will be a welcome addition to our kitchen. Our current knives are Calphalon and Victorinox, so the Messermeister set is a definite step up. Since I know little about more expensive knives, I researched online and discovered that Messermeister is a German company known for its fine knives. According to their website, Messermeister knives are forged, ground, and reground, and finished with an extremely sharp polished edge. It’s also a good time to confess that I had no idea what ‘pakkawood’ and ‘kullenschliffs’ are. ‘Pakkawood’ is a hard wooden laminate that is resistant to heat and is usually used to make handles for cutlery. And ‘kullenschliffs’ are the hollows on each side of the knife that reduce drag and prevent items from sticking to the blade. So we have a strong, sharp blade (made from one piece of forged steel) that will pass easily through meat, a lethal-looking meat fork, and a lifetime guarantee. win-win
Mick McArt
Taking this out of the box and feeling the quality of the metal really impressed me. Feeling how sharp this knife was really shocked me, I love it! But there are a couple of design flaws which I think should be noted for buyers out there. The carving knife doesn't have a hook to prevent slipping fingers moving towards the blade. With a knife this sharp you better make sure your hands don't get all greasy, which is hard to do when you're preparing a turkey. Also the round fastening dots aren't flush with the wood. That part just seems like poor workmanship. I really do like that the handle and blade are one piece with the wood fastened on though. Very nice touch.
Tamara Thorne
I have never owned a German-steel knife before and had absolutely no idea how hard I've been working to cut things up until I took the Messermeister to everything from meat to root vegetables to watermelon. It performs like a champ. I always wondered how chefs carved so easily and beautifully. Now I know.I didn't even know that balance mattered in a knife, but the moment I began using this, I felt it. This big knife, with its scallops to help cut through heavy food like meat and cheese, truly feels like an extension of my hand. It has balance that allows us to make thin slices out of any meat, from pork to turkey and even London Broil, which uses tough, inexpensive beef cut very thin. I made one two nights ago using this knife and it was the first time our London Broil was uniformly sliced to perfect wafer-thinness. And it was easy.Last night my husband went to make sandwiches but found we were out of pre-sliced sharp cheddar. He opened a huge block of extra sharp to slice for our sandwiches. Usually, we end up with little slices of various widths and sizes. This time, I thought he'd found another package of pre-sliced because the cheese was so perfectly and uniformly cut. But he'd sliced it and made it thinner than the pre-sliced since our block of cheese was extra-sharp and would have overpowered the ham at normal width. And it was easy. So easy. That means we don't need to waste money on pre-sliced cheese anymore and that makes us both very happy.I sliced some tomatoes - both perfectly ripe and a little soft - and each slice was perfect - far better than what I get from the ceramic knife I usually use. Even the soft tomatoes sliced. I can slice onions so thin I can see through them. Slices of potato - and even sweet potato - slice as thin as I want. It's all good. And the knife will sharpen easily on our steel or whetstone. (A regular knife would already need sharpening, but this one is retaining its edge no matter what we throw at it.)The lfork has sharp edges instead of being rounded and that helps it hold and grip your roast - and the long tines allow you to hold your roast beast completely still while carving. (The fork has other uses, too - I've been lifting whole roast chickens onto a serving dish by slipping the tines inside the opening - works like a charm!) I also used it to turn a pork shoulder in a dutch oven - it took a jiffy instead of several minutes trying to roll it over. The handles fit both my hand and my husband's very comfortably. They are make of Pakkawood, which is a hard wooden laminate that is resistant to heat that's often used for cutlery and cooking utensil handles. They're waterproof. The set is beautiful yet incredibly functional and bears a lifetime warranty. When the knife touches the fork, it makes a metallic bell tone that I can only call equate to the the sound made when a real crystal glass is tapped. It sounds expensive. You can hear the quality. It's the sort of thing you'd be proud to hand down or give as a wedding present. This set will be the star of many a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, lending beauty, elegance - and the ability to control the knife and carve in a way I never knew existed. Each November, we buy several frozen turkeys to use over coming months for our cats (and ourselves). It's always been a horrible annoyance to cut them up, but with this new carving set it's going to be easy. We are very happy with this set and are hoping Santa brings us a couple more Messermeister knives in smaller sizes this Christmas.

For years I've been using carving knives that butchered my meat and my Thanksgiving turkey. My messermeister avanta kullenschliff carving set is the best knife I've ever used. The weight is perfect, it fits my hand comfortably, and as a bonus it's beautiful. I can handle it with ease. I love it and know I will use it for many years

Messermiester makes quite a nice carving set. Strong and seems quite sturdy with sharp prongs on the holding fork and a nice sharp blade. The description in the vine ad hits the mark. I’ve used this on a beef roast and a whole chicken to date. Relatively effortless cutting is my word. Thank you Messermeister.jerry nachison

I find that this is a really nice carving set, either for yourself or even for a gift. The knife is super sharp and cuts through a roast and chicken like it's butter. The fork is also nice and sharp and is a great size to really get down into the meat to hold it in place while you carve. The wooden handles and polished rivets really give this set a nice handsome look. It's going to look great when carving my turkey for Thanksgiving for sure. Just a beautiful carving set.
Mary Lou Cheatham
This is my first fancy carving set. I think it is the prettiest thing in the kitchen. I love it. The details make the knife and fork so elegant looking that it should be out on display. I can't wait until Thanksgiving when we can use this to carve our turkey. The knife is razor sharp. The handles are elegant looking and easy to hold.

Nicely made and heavyweight set perfect for everyday use and for more formal occasions. I hand wash and dry these and believe they will last a very long time

This carving set is nice and the knife is sharp. You have to hand wash it to protect the finish and wood. They are light and would be perfect for Thanksgiving roasts. The fork is long that you can keep larger pieces of meat in place while you cut.

Although I have not had this knife set for long, it looks extremely well made and durable. The handles are made of Pakkawood and are a nice rich brown in color. Knife is very sharp and made of "German steel" which, I guess, is better than other steel. The set is guaranteed for life based on a manufacturing defect (not normal wear and tear).Overall, a beautiful set that will not only look nice, but perform well. Highly recommended!
Richard Sutton
From the moment I opened the tabbed, clear plastic packaging and held the fork in my hand, I was impressed. I was struck, also by little details, such as the square cross-section of the fork's tines, which keeps the meat it holds very secure. The knife blade slices cleanly and very smoothly. The weight of both are perfect, not too heavy, but really solid feeling and balanced. The finish on the nicely grained wooden handles, is perfect. The handle scales are a tiny bit smaller than the full tang width in both items, which is good for me as it keeps the grip very steady and unlikely to slip, even when cutting up pork roast! The knife blade and edge are the highest quality steel are very finely honed. The shape of the blade promises to make resharpening very easy. It is a set I'll treasure and when the right gift occasion arrives, I will be as proud to give as I am to use this set.

I hadn't heard of Messermeister before this carving knife set, but you can bet I'll consider them when making my next knife purchase. From thse second you look at the packaging, you can tell these are high quality, gorgeous pieces. They feel solid in your hand; the Pakkawood handle is a rich brown and makes the knife feel sumptuous. They are simply gorgeous--and what's more, they work very well! The blades are sharp, and you can tell this is a set to last. It'd make a very nice gift for someone else (or for yourself!)

Ok.... WOW! This is my first fancy carving set and I loveeeee it.. Its also my first knife from this company..It comes in and is beautiful... as in, beautiful! It is manufactured/engineered wood but thats fine, as its waterproof now. I prefer how this knife handle is curved slightly as its easy on the hands for carving meats and what nots. I also googled this knife and agree with another reviewer that this was developed for students at culinary schools... its set up to be rust resistant, hold its sharp edge with little if ever need to resharpen, and is durable yet elegant looking. I was very surprised for it to have a life time warranty too!Best of all is 2 things.. wow wow wow is this knife balanced very nicely.. Its super rasor sharp and has a style and finesse all its own.It is literally a pleasure to own this! The only downside..... is now i need to go re-up my OTHER knives again lol.Once you cut with this, other knives are just garbage lmfao. Grrrrrrr
K. Kasabian
This blade (and the fork) are quite sharp. It surprised me just how sharp the fork was. Both pieces have a good weight, which helps with slicing, as do the concave marks along the blade of the knife. I tried the knife on a flank steak, cutting thin slices on the diagonal. I was able to shave thin pieces with no difficulty. I would buy as a gift set for someone who enjoys grilling, since most knife/block sets don't have a carving knife or fork. The price seems commensurate with the quality. Recommended.

We were given a carving set as a wedding gift and through the years the fork has gone missing. This is my first exposure to Messermeister and the Avanta line of cutlery. This beautiful set features a Pakkawood handle which is an engineered wood composite. This is a good thing for a knife since Pakkawood is waterproof and resists warping and splitting. The edge has semi-circular scallops (aka Granton) which eases the cutting of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Three rivets hold the scales to the tang, in knife lingo. This series (Avanta) was developed for culinary students. The set is crafted from German steel which is rust resistant and holds a sharp edge. The set comes with a lifetime warranty. As for how it feels - the knife is well balanced and ultra sharp. I think receiving this set is inspiring me to roast something in the oven.I'm really impressed by this brand and the quality of the knife/fork in this set. I will be researching their collections and general knife sets. Recommended.
