The water stone was fun to use. I liked the soothing effects of slicing the blade across the surface and seeing the knife become sharper in real time. My knives will remain sharp for years to come from this stone.

This stone is exactly what beginners should be buying. Great size and the two sides are perfect for first time sharpening a knife that has been heavily used then refining the edge on the 1k side. Only minor gripe is that the logo that is embossed in the stone causes skipping until you wear it away. I would recommend buying a coarse diamond stone flattener and grinding off the logo before use on good knives. Rubber base is take it or leave it for someone who has a sinkbridge but is considered part of every whetstone.

Absolutely love this product. It definitely takes some practice to get the hang of it. Gets your knives super sharp and keeps them in good shape. Highly recommend for home cooks.

I'm no expert on knives sharpening but I bought these stones a few years ago and since then i've been using them every couple of months and so far, they helped me produce a much sharper blade. I'm quite happy with this purchase.

The stone is great. I'm no expert by any means, but I am able to get a razor sharp edge on all my knives. The 400 side is for the ruff knives with a ruff edge that's not sharp at all or has some chips (don't put your knives in a dishwasher). The 1000 grit is good for keeping your knives sharp. If you can only afford to have one stone, this is probably the one to have (I have another stone that's 4000/8000 - nice mirror polish). My only complaint is the logo on the stone. Need to use a rougher grit stone to get it off, otherwise you can feel it and it does get a bit annoying (I'm sure it affects your sharpening a bit too). Otherwise, this stone is great. I usually let my stones soak for about an hour before I use them, but I think you should be fine with about 20min of soaking prior to use. The rubber stand does a good job of preventing the stone from moving. Overall, great product and I would reorder this stone or like stones/brand again.

Works great and keeps knives sharp.

First sharpening stone that i've used. Taking some getting used to but starting to get sharp knives (previously just used a ceramic rod).

Amazon Customer
Great whetstone bought for high quality kitchen knives and have been pleased with the results. Very good quality and has been holding up well with the amount it's been used. Definitely would buy again in the future and have recommended it to many people who have asked about it.

Rather a waste of money, but it may help some

Works well for keeping my knives sharp

This stone is a great deal for the price. It comes with a non-slip bumper that you can easily switch from one side to the other. Readily creates a slurry after being soaked for a while and is generally easy to work on.The only downside is that this stone wears very quickly. Even through a single sharpening session you may need to flatten it several times (depending on what you're sharpening), which adds to the cost. That said, this should be less of an issue with longer knives that take advantage of the entire stone. It's definitely a good option for occasional sharpening of kitchen knives, but will wear too quickly and unevenly when sharpening chisels, wood plane blades and other woodworking tools. It will also won't last in heavy/daily sharpening applications.

Good price for a double-sided 2-grit whet stone. Follow the instructions and your knives will be sharp enough to glide through those meats and vegetables like a blowtorch through butter.

Perfect. Very good value for money. Very satisfied. The silicone base is a must!

good to have in your kit

My zwiling knifes now sharp like brand new from manufucture. Just need to practice more to get the right angle correctly.

looks well ...but I need to learn how to use it...so far no luck
EK
Works really well once you have learnt the proper sharpening technique. The silicone base prevents slipping even when wet.

Good quality. Thank you.

Put a nice edge on my knives and had a tight fitting base that kept the stone from moving around
Chris Stewart
excellent product. Easy to use. 400 and 1000 grit is a good combo. Start with this and finish with a10,000 grit and your knives will be razor sharp
John Pittaway
This product met my expectations.
Robert L. Woods
Very good, sharpens them up quickly
daniel
the one and only gripe I had with this was the makers mark needed to be sanded off for the 1000 grit to be effective
Terry M Bell
Worked really well until my son dropped it and it broke in two.:(

I bought this block to sharper my JA Henckles Fine Edge Forget knifes I got at Canadian Tire (14 piece set). With a little practice I have gotten all of the knives paper shaving sharp. I can't imagine wanting them any sharper.Note that honing the blade properly after sharpening is critical. Don't go swiping the blade across the rod as a lightning pace. Keep the rod vertical and pull the knife across at a medium pace. You should feel where the blade is not aligned.
LadyRock
My daughter is a chef and she recommended this stone. Does an excellent job in sharpening any blade in my kitchen.

Perfect for keeping my knives sharp

Good size and length. Does not slip on granite countertop when using it.

I have to admit that I am a total novice when it comes to actually sharpening, or properly using a wet stone. But this product is great. gets all of my sharpening needs to a fantastic edge, and doesn't hold the nasty looking brown marks where the metal shavings decide to hang out when your through. "Two enthusiastic thumbs up!"
Antoine Clermont
The included rubber base should rase the stone a litle higher frome th working surface to allow your hands to better work around it. I guess it's not that difficult to come up with a an idea to solve the problem. All in all, it's a good product and it gets my knife as sharp as new.
frank
A good starting stone. :)

I had good intentions when I bought this -but I don't think i'm using it properly. This item is more of a practice makes perfect, type of item. I was hoping for razer sharp results right away. - but i don't think it's the stone's fault.
Impartial
Works but wears very fast.

Good product. Comes with a nice stand.

I returned it, as it exceeded my needs.

Having bought a decent kitchen knife set, with the obvious wear and tear eventually they became dull. The instructions included are rather clear, and for anyone wondering how easy it is just look up a video on YouTube.Works well to resharpen the knives, with average usage of said kitchen knife set, I use this about once a year to get them back to a good quality cut. For what it's worth, I actually warn family members when I'm done sharpening them. As the knives get duller you get accustomed to said dullness. As a note, I used this to sharpen the blades on a 15 year-old Swiss army knife with great success.
John
I am a chef of 8 years and I have used many stones from henckels to shun stones and the like.I ordered this as a cheaper alternative stone. For under 40 dollars this stone is a steal. The reason I rated this stone 4 stars instead of 5 was because the 1000 grit works very well to get close to a razor like edge, but will not polish the edge of the knife. a 3000-5000-8000 grit stone will be required to put that polished edge back on the knife. I am ordering the messermeister 3000-5000 grit stone asap.
Rob
Go to https://www.zwilling.ca/videos/2?vid=KVBUashMfkE for a good Henckels video on how to use the stone. Be careful not to flatten a good knife too much as you will mark the blade. It would be interesting to see what the next finer stone above 1000 would do for sharpness.
Cesar Lomibao
Great product!!! My knives have never been sharper!!! Great value too!!! I have the spyderco sharpening system that doesn't even come close!!!
MrBob
sharpened a number of knives and the stone did a great job. These knives had been dull enough to bruise or squash anything you tried to cut. now they are knives that will cut.
Tom
Works fantastic! Sharpened all my knives and it doesn't even look like I made a dent into it. Definitely a great buy!
tb
400 is good for fixing your edge and the 1000 gets fairly sharp. Soak them in water for 20 min or so. You will need a finer water stone at some point if you want a truly sharp knife. Pair this with a 4000 to 6000 to complete sharpening. This seems to be a high quality. Watch some U-tube videos of how to do this. There are some great instructional videos on the web.
Jarracco
I bought this to help keep my knives sharp and thus it has done so. the product works perfect but the only problem I have with it is the rubber grib the whetstone is placed in, you should soak your stone before sharpening and in doing so makes a slick surface for your product when ready to use... I just put a towel under the product to stop that, Enjoy the product, I SURE AM!
Chobe
No the best stone but certainly the best value. I have other but i wanted one to keep at the cottage for sharpening my hunting gearPros: produces a good edge, feels like a sturdy stone, and has two grits.Cons: minimal slurry (increasing sharpening time and effort) and appears to already be dishingnote: 2000 grit is more than sufficient to sharpen a pocket knife. for kitcvhen knives you need an aditional one or two stones for finishing (e.g. 4000 and 8000 for japanese)
Ted Sues
A well made sharpening stone with useful grits on both sides. Cuts agressively as you would expect with a waterstone. Good price as well
niknik
i can almost shave with my knives now. soooo much better than all those "quick" knife sharpeners with little metal/ceramic disks that can chip a hard carbon blade. got a small 6000 grit stone from lansky to finish the sharpening though. would have been so awesome if messermeister had a 6000 grit stone in the same price range in canada.
bikerbob
bought this stone for use on kitchen and folding pocket knives. have used it on both and it works well. does take some practice to maintain the proper angle of the blade when using the stone.the two different grits work well for me. they would not be aggressive enough if the blade had nicks etc but for regular touch-ups it is just fine.i like the "rubber foot/boot" that the stone sits in to keep it from sliding around while it is being used. it works well for me.for the price i would certainly recommend this water stone.as stated in another of my reviews, my only suggestion is that you may wish to try the 12" ceramic sharpening rod (made by same company) prior to purchasing this stone. the stone works well, but it takes longer and it requires some practice to keep the blade angle consistent during the sharpening process. I found the rod does as nice a job and i found it quicker and easier to use than the stone for a beginner like myself.as always, quick & free shipping. excellent service from Amazon.ca.
